Saving Hayden Panettiere’s cheerleader was the focus of the hit NBC series “Heroes.”
She told Savvy.com that she makes her character, Claire, who is virtually invincible, appear vulnerable because in spite of her superpowers, she is still a teenage girl finding her way through life.
Panettiere, 17, said although Claire is physically indestructible, “she is not mentally or emotionally indestructible. Her vulnerability is what makes people like her. It is like playing any other character. You ask, ‘Are they mean or nice, disturbed or happy?’ You make her like a normal teenage girl, and I actually am a teenage girl. Claire has no idea how to handle her powers, and that is the honest truth.”
The headlines have been filled recently with heartbreaking stories of young entertainers facing substance abuse and legal problems, but Panettiere has been a refreshingly normal personality in show business, always a likeable presence in films such as Raising Helen and shows like “Ally McBeal” and “Malcolm in the Middle.”
Asked how she differs from some of her peers, Panettiere said she approaches acting from the pursuit of “respect for what I do. I am working to be a respected actress. I think (fellow actresses) get used to perks and, you know, sort of head down the wrong road. You can lose track of what’s important. Their jobs become more about that than their craft. They forget about their love of it, and sometimes it causes people to slack off. I love my craft. I want to mature in it and become better at it every time I do it.”
She promised plenty of more fun and gory blood for her character in season 2 of “Heroes”, which premieres Sept. 24, 2007 on NBC.
“Claire will be somewhat back to her normal teenage self, and the characters will all be struggling to fit in, not to stand out, still hiding from these people. We will have two villains in season 2. It is possible to have villains who are more evil than Skyler from season 1. I wish I could play a villainous character, but people view me as the sweet cheerleader type. You won’t see that particular cheerleader outfit anymore. In season 2, Claire is testing the limits of her powers, discovering her threshold for pain,” she said.
She and fellow cast members will kick off the “Heroes: Season One” DVD and HD DVD release in domestic and international markets by embarking on a multi-city tour to promote the elaborate seven-disc set loaded with bonus features, including 50 deleted scenes and the never aired 73 minute premiere episode.
The “Heroes World Tour” will include personal appearances in various countries Aug. 25th-Sept. 2nd. Members of the “Heroes” cast who will participate in the tour include: Panettiere, Santiago Cabrera (Isaac), Jack Coleman (Horn-Rimmed Glasses), Noah Gray-Cabey (Micah), Greg Grunberg (Matt), Ali Larter (Niki), James Kyson Lee (Ando), Masi Oka (Hiro), Sendhil Ramamurthy (Mohinder), Zachary Quinto (Sylar), Adrian Pasdar (Nathan), and Milo Ventimiglia (Peter).
