Without doubt, one of the most chilling moments I’ve had as a journalist and photographer was coming face to face with Hayward Bissell, an Ohio native who murdered and cannibalized his girlfriend, taking her corpse on a joyride that ended with a police confrontation in Valley Head, Alabama.
Bissell attempted to run over a couple of people in the Mentone, Alabama area, which led to the showdown. In his preliminary court appearance, which was held in the jail because the 400+ pound madman was considered too dangerous to move, Bissell made quite an impression on everyone gathered, pleasuring himself from behind the cell bars and eating his own feces from the cell toilet. His attorney said it would not be difficult to plead an insanity defense. “He’s crazy as hell,” the attorney famously responded.
There’s nothing quite like getting feet away from a brutal killer to snap a photo and asking him questions.
Bissell’s story was detailed in a true-crime novelization by my former co-worker, Sheila Johnson. It makes for an interesting read if you have a strong stomach.

Hayward Bissell is moved from the DeKalb County Jail for psychiatric evaluation. He was arrested for murdering and eating parts of his girlfriend.
Keep the faith, my Internet friend. You are a first-class writer and deserve to be heard.
